Momma Tried   by Merle Haggard  used under license       April 2006

For the E9th Pedal Steel. The program uses Pedals A, B and C as well as the E Raise and E Lower Knee levers.

One of the greatest songs  for Steel Guitars !  Song program has Intro, two verses played out of two different phrasing positions, bridge, Telecaster solo and two Steel Solo's played with Speed Pickin' phrases. Also included on the CD are 5 short conversation tracks where we discuss the phrases used and  where they come from. Just like Speed Pickin for Hacks, the key to this program is daily practice and execution.

The first  verse uses common AB pedals along with a simple BC Pedal use.

Verse two uses AB Pedals along with the A Pedal and E Raise lever ( F lever)

The phrases/positions  used in this tune can basically be applied to ANY Country tune that you may be playing on the bandstand.

Speed Pickin' for Hacks  ...Shows 3 different basic elements for playing at medium to up-tempo which can be used  with most any tune that they throw at you on the bandstand. It will focus on  simple phrases and mostly focus on the relationship of the open  Pedal Positions, AB Pedal Positions , AF  Positions  and  more for the  same chords and in family relative chords.

The exercise is written and played in Two Keys,  D and A  with the plan being the student should reverse  the phrases and play all phrases in both keys to get accustomed to playing the same phrases  in different fret board positions.

The key to this package is practice time. The more you play it the more you will see and understand how it all connects. This is NOT intended to be a program where you listen today and play it all tomorrow. This program is about becoming familiar  with position   playing  without thinking about it.

Early Recording information:

All tracks were recorded direct to a Boss BR8 Digital workstation. The BR8 records at 16 bit  44.1 khz  CD quality.  Input effects programs were written for each individual Instrument  and all final mixes were done on the BR8. The completed tracks were transferred to PC via stereo line out and recorded as wave files at 44.1 khz and transferred to CD  using either  Musicmatch version 7.5 or Nero version 5 CD burning software. I can't say enough good stuff about this little Boss BR8..very easy to use, nice sound quality.. although...

Recent recording Information: "Starting with Someday Soon"

I am currently using  a 24 bit / 16 track Yamaha  AW2816 .  Awesome machine, slight learning curve but well worth the effort. I use an ART dual 12AX7 Tube Preamp for all Instruments and vocals .  For vocals and Acoustic Guitar I use  an MXL 2001 Large Diaphragm Condenser  mic and  the Electric Guitars and Pedal Steel are mostly recorded direct.  Various other mics are in the "bag" which I use to match the scenario.

I have written Effects, EQ  and Processor patches for the Steel , Telecaster, Strat and "HumBucker" Guitars

and they are saved as user patches on the Yamaha recorder. I do record 99% of the time with headphones but do a track check on the near fields before the final mix.

Final mixes are mastered to the EDIROL  R1 Wave recorder in 24 bit stereo wave  , then transferred to the PC.

Additional recording updates: 2009/2010

Two versions of Cakewalk  Sonar running on an XP machine.   Makes life very easy for recording, saving and transferring files.
